The History of SWOSSAA
On June 30, 1962, thirty-six schools from Essex and Kent Counties broke away from WOSSA to form SWOSSA. The association had three member associations: KCSSAA (Kent County), ECSSA (Essex County) and WSSA (Windsor). Mr. J. Mencel (Herman Secondary) was the first President. Tony Techko (Riverside) was the first Secretary-Treasurer. Col. Arthur Pill (Blenheim) designed the SWOSSAA crest. Initial fees were 10 cents per student with two cents going to OFSAA. The first SWOSSAA champion was the boys golf team from Massey Secondary School. Annual meetings were held every June with each school allowed up to three votes. The Board of Directors consisted of a President, two Vice Presidents, Secretary-Treasurer, three directors from each member association, two reps to OFSAA plus a rep from St. Clair College and the University of Windsor.
Fast forward to September 1996. A minor name change: SWOSSA became SWOSSAA! A major change: LSSAA (Lambton) left WOSSA to join SWOSSAA. The governance of SWOSSAA changed. The Annual Meeting was eliminated. The Board of Directors was revamped. Another vice-president was added. The reps from St. Clair College and the University of Windsor were dropped.
Fast forward sixteen months to January 1998. The province had merged school boards. The Windsor and Essex School Boards were merged as well as the Lambton and Kent School Boards. WSSA (Windsor) and ECSSA (Essex County) merged to form WECSSAA. KCSSAA and LSSAA merged to form LKSSAA in September 2014. SWOSSAA is now made up of WECSSAA and LKSSAA.
There have only been five (5) Secretary-Treasurers of SWOSSAA : Tony Techko, Ted Emerson, Bob Issell, Sandy Blackshaw and Greg LeNeve since SWOSSAA’s beginnings in 1962.
